Free speech has been a subject of cultural conflict. “Free speech” has originally started as a core legal doctrine enshrined in the first amendment of the constitution. As such, it was meant to restrict the government or, more specifically, Congress from passing censorship laws. Free speech has swung from being a liberal rallying cry in mid - 20th century to a conservative one today. From the state’s perspective, it may have seemed easier to allow “free speech,” when the primary modes of news and politics were controlled by a manageable number of corporations.
