I made SearchOrganizer - a new Chrome extension to improve search results
Search engines have been getting worse, so I decided to do something about it.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
As many people have remarked, search engine results no longer "feel" good. Issues are varied, but generally they include:
- not finding the exact answer to a slightly obscure query
- having the same article headline copied and pasted across the first few results. This is especially frustrating if the topic actually has multiple opinions
- only favoring certain top-level domains
- some censorship and de-ranking
- too many SEO optimized sites bordering on spam
In short, one of the main descriptions of what's wrong is that "results are not diverse enough," especially on the first page. If you have the patience to look through the next 6 pages, then you might find what you are looking for, however nobody has time for that. Also you'd rather get a quick sense about whether or not you can or can’t find something, so that you can either switch your query or search engine.
If you wish the results became more diverse and also it was easier to navigate the top 150 results, I made an extension called Search Organizer to do just that:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/search-organizer/nfakbdgjjceodmceeennihjlcoedogba?hl=en
After installing the chrome extension on either Bing (free version) or Google (paid version), you will see the top results replaced with clusters of results. Search Organizer fetches 70-150 results and clusters similar ones together. It doesn't change answers, news, ads, etc. The top result in each cluster is displayed. Click the
button to see the additional results of the cluster underneath. In addition there is a table of contents on the right hand side pointing out the most defining phrases and words of each cluster.
Example queries:
Binance
Austin art galleries
(note, the +show button is pressed and become a - hide button)
Elon Musk
(note, the answers are on top and preserved. The clusters are below)
Haskell package manager
It's free for Bing and and a $15 one time payment for Google.
Payment ($15 to enable Google) is handled by Stripe and ExtensionPay.
